Today, Prof. Dr. Michael Schütz starts his new role as Professor of Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He also takes on the role of Managing Director of the Centre for Musculoskeletal Surgery (CMSC), which combines the orthopaedics and trauma surgery departments on Campus Charité Mitte and Campus Virchow-Klinikum. Prof. Schütz has a proven track record in interdisciplinary polytrauma care, and a strong translational background in the field of trauma and reconstructive surgery.

Prof. Schütz's leadership will see the CMSC develop into a tertiary trauma centre of international standing. As a trauma surgeon, he emphasizes the interdisciplinary cooperation between the different surgical specialties and the departments of anaesthesia, emergency and intensive care medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and geriatric medicine. Prof. Schütz is hoping to promote interdisciplinary perspectives in the clinical setting, while also hoping to extend this approach to the field of research: “I am particularly interested to strengthen the collaborative musculoskeletal research foci of Charité and the Julius Wolff Institute, to promote translational research into patient care in the centre.”

Prof. Schütz has been involved in clinically-oriented research since the beginning of his surgical career. Born in Hanau, Germany, he studied at Philipps-Universität in Marburg and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, before completing his doctoral thesis in aerospace medicine at Aachen. His training in surgery and trauma surgery initially led him to Davos, and then on to Charité's Campus Virchow-Klinikum. He completed his habilitation at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in 2001, before becoming a Senior Consultant at Charité. During the development of the New Revised Medical Curriculum (Modellstudiengang Medizin), Michael Schütz acted as a spokesperson and central point of contact for the field of trauma surgery. His goal is to further promote his discipline and to establish it as an integral part of the medical curriculum.

In 2004, following his appointment to the newly-created position of Professor for Trauma Surgery at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Prof. Schütz became the Head of Trauma Surgery at Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) in Brisbane, Australia. During his time at PAH – a tertiary care hospital serving patients from an area four times the size of Germany – one of his main areas of responsibility was the multidisciplinary treatment of trauma patients. From 2004 to 2006, Prof. Schütz played a pivotal role in the development of an integrated trauma care system for the state of Queensland. As the first Director of the 'Statewide Clinical Network for Trauma' in 2007, he was responsible for improving the treatment of polytrauma patients in Queensland, Australia.

Prof. Schütz has a range of research interests, including fracture healing, the regeneration of large bone defects, and trauma system management. The past few years have seen him cooperate with partners from industry, developing special implant designs for patients in AsiaPacific, which are now widely used for the treatment of fractures. “For many years now, my aim and focus have been to ensure that the implementation of the latest surgical techniques in the field of trauma surgery is guided by clinical knowledge and expertise,” says Prof. Schütz, who will continue to promote the role and significance of clinical researchers at the Charité.

Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery (CMSC)
The CMSC is the largest center for trauma surgery and orthopaedics in Germany. Under the leadership of its Medical Director, Prof. Dr. Carsten Perka, and Managing Director, Prof. Dr. Michael Schütz, this academic tertiary-care center serves patients from both within Germany and beyond; the CMSC offers the full spectrum of surgical and conservative treatment options available in the field of modern orthopaedics and that of trauma and reconstructive surgery.
