Charité doctors providing medical care for mother and babies

For the first time ever, a 65-year old woman has given birth to quadruplets. The infants were delivered on Tuesday, May 19, at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin via C-section during the 26th week of gestation.

The one girl and three boys weigh between 655 and 960 grams each and are between 30 and 35 centimeters in length. They are presently receiving medical care at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Charité. The attending physicians are pleased with how the infants are progressing, even though the critical phase is not yet over: "The children need lots of attention and require intensive medical care" according to Prof. Dr. Christoph Bührer, Director of the Department of Neonatology.

As regards the health status of his patients, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Henrich, Director of the Department of Obstetrics affirmed: "The mother is doing as well as can be expected and is recovering from her C-section; she visits her babies every day." The quadruplets will remain under the care of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for another few weeks.
